Distended subacromial-subdeltoid bursa

Case contributed by Chris O'Donnell
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Acute pain in the shoulder with restricted abduction, ? cuff pathology

Patient Data

Age: 45
Gender: Female

Fluid-filled distension of the bursa with partial tearing of the supraspinatus tendon at its insertion (arrow)

Case Discussion

The bursa is "saddle bag" in morphology (seen on the sagittal view) and extends medially to the AC joint and inferiorly to the surgical neck of humerus. The presence of fluid indicates pathology either within the bursa (bursitis) or in adjacent structures, most notably the supraspinatus tendon.
