MRI spine showing sacral spina bifida associated with a low lying cord (level of S1) and the placode–lipoma interface lying within the spinal canal.
Enlargement of the right S2/3 foramen by fat tissue.
Case Discussion
This case illustrates a lipomyelocele which is a common closed spinal dysraphism and, as in this case, is usually associated with a tethered low lying cord.
The main differentiating feature between a lipomyelocele and lipomyelomeningocele is the position of the placode–lipoma interface, inside or outside the spinal canal, respectively.
