Pelvic CT angiogram MIP image (figure 1) in a trauma patient demonstrates the variant right corona mortis artery (arrow) originating from the inferior epigastric artery (arrow head) and coursing posteroinferiorly along the anterior pelvic arch. This corona mortis artery narrowly escapes injury as it lies in close proximity to a displaced fracture fragment.
Volume rendered CT angiogram images without (figure 2 and 3) and with bone subtraction (figure 4) show a vertical shear type pelvic injury with fractures of both the right superior and inferior pubic rami as well as bilateral sacroiliac joints diastasis more pronounced on the right. The anatomical relationship of the corona mortis artery is better depicted on these images.
