Presentation
Recent laparotomy for biopsy. Abdominal pain.
Patient Data
Marked enlargement of the ileocecal valve, which is soft tissue density. The cecum and ascending colon to the level of the hepatic flexure is thick walled. Terminal ileum appears normal. There is no small or large bowel obstruction.
Extensive para-aortic lymphadenopathy the with further masses within the mesentery. Peritoneal nodularity. At the site of presumed biopsy there is mixed fat and soft tissue density with some tiny locules of gas.
Bilateral pleural effusions.
Case Discussion
Burkitt lymphoma is an aggressive malignancy that can involve multiple systems. When it involves the bowel, there is a predominance for the ileocecal region.
