Age: 40 years
Gender: Female

Abdominal mass measures 17 x 8 x 16 cm with regions of cystic degeneration/necrosis within the right side of the mass - the largest low density region measures 4.5 x 5.2 cm.

The mass displaces the bowel to the periphery.

No evidence of bowel obstruction.

No further focal nodule identified within the peritoneal or retroperitoneal spaces.

The solid organs of the upper abdomen are unremarkable.

MACROSCOPIC DESCRIPTION: 

A soft white core biopsy 18 mm long and 1 mm in diameter.

MICROSCOPIC DESCRIPTION:

Sections show a core paucicellular fibrous tissue composed of bundles of collagen interspersed with bland stellate fibroblasts and a few small vessels. In immunostains, there is strong nuclear staining for beta-catenin.

DIAGNOSIS: Core biopsy of abdominal lesion: Fibrous tissue suggestive of a desmoid tumor.
