Known case of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) confirmed by echocardiography.
Patient Data
Pulmonary vascularity is increased.
Heart is enlarged with dilated left ventricle.
The aorta and main pulmonary artery segment are dilated. Calcifications are seen at the aortopulmonary window.
A 5Fr Judkins Right 4 (JR4) catheter was used for right heart cardiac catheterization while a 5Fr pigtail catheter was placed in the descending aorta. Descending aortogram in the lateral and RAO views were done to visualize the PDA. A duct occluder was implanted. Repeat descending aortogram after deployment showed complete occlusion of the PDA.
The PDA closure device (duct occluder) is seen in place.
Case Discussion
This case demonstrates the classic radiographic appearance of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) and a technique used to close the shunt with a duct occluder. The duct occluder is one of the numerous medical devices that can be seen on chest radiographs.
