Presentation
Right jaw pain.
Patient Data
Lytic lesion of mandibular ramus centered over the retromolar trigone may be consistent with giant cell granuloma.
Case Discussion
Giant cell granulomas are benign intraosseous lesions, typically occurring in young females. They result from a local inflammatory process, thought to be secondary to trauma. Due to these lesions often being symptomatic, active management is usually performed. Non surgical treatment may include:
- intralesional corticosteroid injection
- subcutaneous calcitonin injection
The more "aggressive" giant cell granulomas are treated with either surgical resection or curettage. Nevertheless, recurrence rates are high and quoted to be between 11-49% 1.
