Ectopic ureter with massive hydroureter and renal atrophy

Case contributed by Henry Knipe
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Left flank pain.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Male

Ectopic insertion of the left ureter into the prostatic urethra, probably via the left seminal vesicle. Massive left hydroureter and hydronephrosis with very little renal tissue remaining. Normal right kidney.

Case Discussion

The patient was continent, so presumably the insertion is above the external urethral sphincter. Ectopic ureters are commonly associated with duplex kidneys and VACETRL abnormalities.
