The talocrural (ankle) joint articular surfaces have the appearance of a ball and socket joint, as opposed to the usual hinge type synovial joint.
CT further demonstrates the ball and socket type synovial articulation between the hemispherical talar and congruent concave tibio-fibular articular surfaces.
Case Discussion
A ball and socket ankle (talocrural) joint is a congenital or acquired anatomical variant. Rather than the usual hinge type synovial articulation, the ankle joint forms a ball and socket articulation between the hemispherical talus and congruent concave tibio-fibular articular surfaces. If congenital, a ball and socket ankle joint is associated with other anatomical variations including tarsal coalition and short limb.
