Symphalangism of little toe with fracture

Case contributed by Vikas Shah
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Stubbed toe against the door.

There is a fracture of the distal phalanx of the little toe, which comprises a congenital fusion of the distal and middle phalanges (anatomical variant).

Case Discussion

The middle and distal phalanges of the 5th toe may be fused (symphalangism). Care should be taken to differentiate a fracture of such a phalanx from a natural joint line.
