Presented with ruptured appendix mucocoele 1 year earlier. Now has increasing abdominal distension.
Patient Data
There is a very large volume of low density material filling the peritoneal cavity and causing abdominal distension. The material causes scalloping of the surface of the liver and spleen. It extends into bilateral inguinal herniae. Scattered foci of calcification are noted.
Case Discussion
The pathological analysis of the appendectomy specimen revealed a mucocoele caused by a mucinous cystadenoma, with a small focal rupture. Due to comorbidities, no further treatment was undertaken, This CT reveals extensive and disseminated malignancy in the form of pseudomyxoma peritonei. Large pools of gelatinous material fill the abdominal cavity and classically cause scalloping of the surface of the liver. Small foci of calcification are often seen scattered around the abdomen.
