Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Female

There is diffuse loss of grey-white differentiation and sulcal effacement within the bilateral cerebral hemispheres. The cerebellum is subtly more dense than the supratentorial brain. The basal ganglia are not discernible, which is likely related to the timing of this exam.

Case Discussion

Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy with diffuse cerebral edema. The basal ganglia are not overtly hypodense, but the most important features of diffuse grey-white obscuration and sulcal effacement are present. There is a subtle 'bright cerebellum' sign.
