Hypertrophic phenomena and gross heterogeneous calcifications that extend from the iliac bones to the middle third of the femurs. A firearm projectile is located near to left ischial rami.
Hypertrophic phenomena and gross heterogeneous muscle calcifications that extend from the pelvis to the middle third of the thighs. A firearm projectile is located in the soft tissues in left inguinal region. Notice that the bone cortical isn't affected.
Case Discussion
Myositis ossificans is a benign process characterized by heterotopic ossification usually within large muscles. The diagnosis is usually based on the patient's history (of trauma), clinical symptoms and on imaging findings when the zone phenomenon can be depicted. Its importance stems in large part from its ability to mimic more aggressive pathological processes.
