Stieda fracture - bilateral

Presentation

Crush injury of the hips and thighs.

Patient Data

Age: 20 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

Bilateral avulsion injury of the medial collateral ligament (i.e. Stieda fracture) appearing as a small stripe of detached bone medial to the medial femoral condyle.
There was no radiographic evidence of any other injury.

Case Discussion

An acute avulsion injury of the medial collateral ligament is termed a Stieda fracture. Nonunion of a Stieda fracture earns it the term Pellegrini-Stieda lesion.
