The bones are abnormally dense and there is a proximal 5th metatarsal fracture. The location of the fracture is an unusual location for a fracture in a child.
Case Discussion
The key to this case is recognizing that the bone density is abnormal. This is a Jones fracture in a patient with abnormal dense bones - they have osteopetrosis which predisposes them to fractures - hence, the adult-type fracture in a child.
