Accessory navicular syndrome

Presentation

Painful swelling of the medial foot for 3 months.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Male
mri

Type 2 accessory navicular bone with bone marrow edema and contrast enhancement at the medial aspect of the navicular bone and accessory navicular bone. Periarticular soft tissue edema. There is also a mild tibiotalar joint effusion and focal bone marrow edema at the anteromedial aspect of the talus. 

Findings are suggestive of accessory navicular syndrome.

Case Discussion

The most frequent cause of the accessory navicular syndrome is a type II accessory navicular bone. The pain was localized to the medial aspect of the foot, exacerbated by walking and athletic activity.
