Acute appendicitis

Case contributed by Varun Babu
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Acute onset right iliac fossa pain

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Male
ct

Inflamed thickened appendix with average caliber of 11 mm. Mild periappendiceal fat stranding. Normal study of the rest of the bowel. Three to four subcentimetric ileocolic lymph nodes

Case Discussion

Dirty periappendiceal fat and a thickened appendix is easily demonstrated in this non-contrast study. Quite often a plain CT abdomen suffices to diagnose appendicitis, and also other local causes of right iliac fossa pain.
