Acute appendicitis - pediatric

Presentation

Right lower quadrant abdominal and periumbilical pain, fever, positive McBurney sign.

Patient Data

Age: 6 years
Gender: Male
Ultrasound

Thickened, hyperemic appendix with a maximum thickness of 21 mm. Hyperemia of the adjacent small bowel and mesenteric fat.

Case Discussion

A markedly inflamed appendix was demonstrated on ultrasound with inflammation extending into the adjacent small bowel and fat. Rebound tenderness at this point. Acute appendicitis diagnosed and confirmed at surgery.
