Presentation

History of fall.

Patient Data

Age: 15 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

There is an undisplaced transverse fracture involving the metadiaphyseal junction of the fifth metatarsal, approximately 1.6 cm above the tuberosity.

Adjacent soft tissue thickening noted.

x-ray

Additional zoomed images depict the fracture well.

4 weeks later

x-ray

Follow up image shows mild callus formation.

Limb in POP.

No complicating features.

Case Discussion

It is important to distinguish acute from chronic Jones fractures, because chronic cases may present as stress fractures at a later stage. Stress fractures usually have poor prognosis for healing.

Chronic Jones fractures show non-union with adjacent medullary sclerosis. However the medullary canal can be obliterated as well.
