Presentation
Increasing abdominal and back pain, nausea and fever for three days.
Patient Data
The pancreas is edematous with mild surrounding fat stranding. There was no evidence of complication. The adjacent small bowel is thick walled, likely reactive.
Fatty liver. A relative hyperdense region at the gallbladder fossa may represent focal fatty sparing. Adrenal glands and spleen have a normal appearance. More than 10 renal stones are demonstrated in the right kidney and more than five renal stones are present in the left kidney; the largest is at the left superior pole and measures 7 mm. The kidneys have an otherwise normal appearance.
Case Discussion
Findings are consistent with mild (uncomplicated) pancreatitis. Incidental note of fatty liver (hepatic steatosis) and renal calculi. In this case, the lipase was elevated at 848 IU/dl.
