Ankle fracture - Weber A

Presentation

Rolled left ankle two weeks ago.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years

Left ankle radiographs

x-ray

There is a minimally displaced transverse fracture through the distal ulnar epiphysis, the no other level of the talar dome (Weber A). No other fractures or malalignment.

Case Discussion

Ankle fracture classified as Weber A represents: 

  • fractures below the level of the talar dome
  • usually transverse
  • tibiofibular syndesmosis intact
  • deltoid ligament intact
  • medial malleolus often, but not always, fractured
  • usually stable if medial malleolus intact
