Patient Data
Lateral ankle radiograph shows osteophytic spur formation at the anterior tibial margin with a subtle corresponding talar spur. There is also subchondral cyst formation in the anterior tibia and adjacent soft tissue swelling.
Case Discussion
The osteophytic spurs are commonly referred to as "tibiotalar spurs". Anterior ankle impingement syndrome is the result of chronic repetitive trauma with impingement of the anterior tibia against the talus. The associated changes described are best appreciated on the lateral view. Clinical features of anterior ankle impingement syndrome include painful and limited dorsiflexion and anterior joint line swelling.
