Case Discussion

Asbestosis refers to the later development of diffuse interstitial fibrosis secondary to asbestos fiber inhalation and should not be confused with an asbestos-related lung disorder. This case demonstrates both entities.

Asbestos-related lung disease findings include pleural plaques, that tend to be calcified, and round atelectasis. Benign pleural thickening and pleural effusions may also be present although not in this case.

With regards to asbestosis, there are findings of interstitial lung fibrosis related to asbestos exposure, as the case shows intralobular linear opacities (reticulations) and subpleural curvilinear bands. Later on, in the disease, there may be honeycomb fibrosis (UIP pattern) as seen at both lung bases.
