Asymmetric density - problem-solving with tomosynthesis

Case contributed by Gerard Carbo
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Asymptomatic patient (routine screening).

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Female

Small asymmetry located in the medial / posterior plane of the inner quadrant of the right breast, visualized only on the CC projection.

Red circle frames the asymmetry described above.

CC-R tomosynthesis view shows a vascular loop corresponding to the asymmetry described above. No suspicious lesions.

Case Discussion

Breast asymmetric densities is as an area of fibroglandular tissue visible on only one mammographic projection, mostly caused by superimposition of normal breast tissue.

Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) has the ability to separate mammographic planes and reduces the masking effect of overlapping tissues. In these cases, tomosynthesis reduces false positives and recall rates.
