Presentation

Type 2 diabetic. Foot ulcer.

Patient Data

Age: 55 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

Dressing in situ on the 5th digit.

Soft tissue loss in relation to the phalanges of the 5th digit.

Lucency and minor cortical irregularity of the proximal and intermediate phalanges of the 5th digit.

3 month later

x-ray

With the exception of the base of the proximal phalanx, the phalanges of the 5th digit are no longer evident.  The bone has been resorbed with associated soft tissue loss.

3 months later

x-ray

With the exception of the base of the proximal phalanx, the phalanges of the 5th digit are no longer evident. 

The bone has been resorbed with associated soft tissue loss.  The lateral aspect of the 5th metatarsal head and residual base of the proximal phalanx is now exposed.

The interdigital arteries are calcified.

Case Discussion

Autoamputation appearances with exposed bone are the end result in this diabetic foot.

This patient didn't undergo any surgical procedure.
