Benign external hydrocephalus

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Child with macrocephaly.

Patient Data

Age: 7 months
Gender: Male

Widening of the bi-frontal and anterior inter-hemispheric CSF spaces are seen without flattening of adjacent gyri. There are normal sulci posteriorly and normal ventricular size with no pressure effects on the surrounding brain tissue.

No SOL , Hemorrhage or midline shift is noted. No abnormalities are seen in the basal ganglia, internal capsule, corpus callosum, or thalamus. The cerebellopontine angle area appears normal on each side.

Case Discussion

Findings of CT Scan is the most likely compatible with “benign enlargement of subarachnoid spaces” which also known as “benign external hydrocephalus”. The condition resolves spontaneously by the age of 2 years.
