Bilateral neonatal clavicle fractures

Case contributed by Adrian Herrera Sánchez
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Macrosomic newborn after a birth with shoulder dystocia.

Patient Data

Age: 14 days
Gender: Female

The chest radiograph reveals bilateral clavicular fractures with the development of bone callus.

Additionally, there is a humeral fracture of the left proximal metaphysis.

Case Discussion

Unilateral fracture of the clavicle is one of the commonest birth injuries of the neonate, however bilateral clavicular fractures and humeral fracture are very rare.

The first radiograph was performed 14 days after birth, which allows the development of bone callus in both clavicles, but not in the left humeral fracture.
