Breast cyst: "glittering appearance"

Case contributed by Dr Giorgio M Baratelli

A residual complex cyst of 2 cm is detected by ultrasounds in a postmenopausal patient. The patient had many aspirations of apocrine breast macrocysts between the ages of 35 and 45.

Patient Data

Age: 50-year-old

Ultrasounds show a complex cyst:
an oval anechoic circumscribed mass with posterior enhancement and many brightly echogenic foci  inside, giving a glittering appearance when moving during the examination.

Case Discussion

The floating and brightly echogenic foci within the cystic fluid are debris and  cholesterol crystals.
