Calcified abdominal aortic aneurysm on pelvic radiograph

Case contributed by Craig Hacking
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Lower back and pelvic pain for 2 weeks. No history of trauma.

Patient Data

Age: 90 years
Gender: Male

Degenerative changes of both hips. No fracture or mal-alignment. SI joints are normal.

Projected over the lower lumbar vertebrae, the abdominal aorta is calcified and aneurysmal.

Case Discussion

This pelvic X-ray lead to a multiphase CT of the abdomen and pelvis, demonstrating a large infrarenal AAA but without signs of impeding rupture. The patient went on to have an elective EVAR which eased the pain and the patient recovered well.
