Presentation
Non specific abdominal pain. Ultrasound showed focal liver lesion.
Patient Data
Heterogeneous hepatic focal lesion measuring about 4 x 4 cm is seen in the left liver lobe, with posterior acoustic shadow.
A well-defined rounded hepatic mass lesion, with calcifications is seen in segment II of the left liver lobe. The lesion shows the characteristic water lily sign. The findings are diagnostic of hepatic hydatid cyst type CE 5 according to 2001 WHO classification.
Incidental findings: non-obstructing left renal stone, fat-containing para-umbilical hernia and small uterine fibroid.
Case Discussion
The therapeutic choice for hepatic hydatid disease includes medical treatment, surgical treatment, endoscopic interventional treatment, and minimally invasive methods.
This depends on which stage of the hydatid disease is, according to the WHO classification of hepatic hydatid disease.
Stage CE 5, inactive disease, where the cyst shows thick partially or completely calcified wall.
