Presentation

Presented with pulsatile, painless angle of mandible mass.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Female

There is a tumor nestled between the external & internal carotid arteries in the carotid space.
The mass signal intensity is nearly similar to that of muscle on T1, and of increased signal on T2. The classic "salt and pepper" appearnce is not obvious in this case. Postcontrast images show it to be an avidly-enhancing mass.

MRA source images show splaying of the internal and external carotids plus enhancing carotid body tumor.

DWI showed evidence of restricted diffusion along with the ADC. This does not reflect the benign nature of the tumor.
