Cerebral metastasis - choriocarcinoma

Case contributed by Frank Gaillard
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Headaches.

Patient Data

Age: Middle-age
Gender: Female

CT with contrast demonstrates a frontal lobe mass which is hyperdense/enhancing. Without comparing to pre-contrast study it is difficult to assess for density (in this case the mass was hyperdense unfortunately pre-contrast CT is not available).

Case Discussion

The patient went on to have a resection.

Histology:

Sections of all three specimens show predominantly recent hemorrhage, associated with focal metastatic carcinoma, consistent with metastatic choriocarcinoma. Immunohistochemical studies show that the neoplastic cells are immunopositive for HCG and are immunonegative for alpha-fetoprotein.

Note: Unfortunately, this is an older case and I have no further information or imaging.
