Chance fracture involving the L1 vertebral body with involvement of posterior elements and mild anterior wedging of the L1 vertebral body.

Case Discussion

Chance fracture is an unstable injury of the spine commonly caused by flexion around a seatbelt restraint. The anterior column is compressed and there are transverse distraction fractures through the posterior elements

This seatbelt injury was first described by G. Q. Chance in 1948.
