Chiari II malformation - antenatal

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

G3P2 at 23 weeks pregancy.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound

The ultrasound images demonstrate:

  • small posterior fossa
  • dilated supratentorial ventricular system
  • midline cystic mass with no skin cover at the lumbar region, communicating with the spinal canal through a spinal dysraphism (spina bifida aperta). The adjacent segment of the spinal cord is angulated towards the cystic mass in keeping with myelomeningocele. 
  • No other associated fetal malformations were seen.
