Coarctation of the aorta

Case contributed by Stefan Tigges
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Pre-operative chest X-ray.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

Lungs clear, cardiac silhouette normal in size. There is posterior notching of the posterior and inferior ribs and a "figure 3" sign.

ct

Dilated ascending aorta with aortic coarctation just distal to the left subclavian artery origin. Dilated internal mammary and intercostal arteries.

Case Discussion

Good example of plain radiographic signs (figure 3 and rib notching) of coarctation of the aorta and CT findings showing dilated collateral vessels (internal mammary and posterior intercostal). Be sure to look at the dilated posterior intercostal arteries on the coronal CT scan that nicely illustrate how rib notching occurs.
