Presentation

Three weeks of bloody diarrhea.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Female

Impression of a featureless gas pattern within the transverse colon extending distally, as well as thumb printing pattern, indicating mucosal edema.

Gross diffuse bowel wall thickening with mucosal hyperemia and a target type appearance to the colon extends from the rectum to the proximal ascending colon with relative sparing of the cecum. There is associated pericolic fat stranding and marked vascular engorgement of the omental and mesenteric vasculature.

Case Discussion

The patient proceeded to a subtotal colectomy. 

Histology: Chronic inflammatory bowel disease of indeterminate type with marked activity; no dysplastic features seen.
