Presentation
Respiratory distress.
Patient Data
The frontal radiograph demonstrates cystic lucencies occupying the left hemithorax, which appear continuous with abdominal bowel gas, with a displacement of the cardiac silhouette to the right.
Post-surgical x-ray showed clear lungs, the heart is in a normal position.
Bowel loops are seen below the diaphragm.
NG tube is seen above the level of the diaphragm, repositioning is required.
ETT is seen at the trachea and needs repositioning.
Case Discussion
This case demonstrates typical appearances of a left-sided congenital diaphragmatic hernia (Bochdalek hernia). Post-surgical x-ray showing clear lungs.
Congenital diaphragmatic hernias are often detected at prenatal sonography. Bochdalek hernias are located posterolaterally and account for approximately 90% of cases.
