Corrosive esophagitis

Case contributed by Dr Ahmed Abdrabou

History of caustic ingestion 2 months ago followed by dysphagia and odynophagia.

Patient Data

Age: 5 years old
Gender: Male

Long segment esophageal stricture with no extra luminal leakage of contrast. Few air bubbles are seen as lucent filling defects.

Case Discussion

Corrosive ingestion can harm the esophagus without the stomach as the gastric acid can neutralize the alkalinity of the caustic substances. The severity depends on the time of contact between the esohpageal mucosa and the agent as well as the concentration of the caustic substance.
