Case Discussion

Crossed fused renal ectopia is believed to be a result of abnormal development of the ureteric bud and metanephric blastema during the fourth to eighth weeks of intrauterine life. After Horseshoe kidney, it is the most frequent common abnormality of the urinary tract.

Actual incidence of this anomaly is not known as a large majority are asymptomatic. Estimated incidence at autopsy is 1:2000.

It may be associated with pyelonephritis, hydronephrosis due to pelviureteric junction obstruction, urolithiasis and vesicoureteral reflux.
