Crowned dens syndrome

Incidentally noted in a patient with a history of a fall. Also seen in this patient (not shown) are multiple craniofacial fractures and parenchymal contusion hematomas.

Patient Data

Age: 80 years
Gender: Male

Faint calcifications surround the dens in a "crown"-like fashion. 

Case Discussion

Faint calcifications lining the dens are usually associated with calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate deposition disease or hydroxyapatite deposition disease.
