Developmental dysplasia of the hip

Case contributed by Frank Gaillard
Diagnosis certain

Patient Data

Age: 14 months
Gender: Female

14 months of age

x-ray

The left femoral head ossification center is small and the femoral head is laterally subluxed. The acetabulum is shallow and dysplastic.

26 months of age

x-ray

Although the size of the femoral head ossification center, the femoral epiphysis is flattened and widened. The acetabular appearance is better, but it remains dysplastic and the hip remains laterally subluxed and uncovered.

4 years of age

x-ray

Acetabular osteotomy has been performed and the femoral head is now in joint and well covered. There is heterotopic new bone formation laterally at the site of the osteotomy.

Case Discussion

These three x-rays taken over the course of two and a half years demonstrate features of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) on the left.
