It is important to use consistent and agreed upon nomenclature when describing the various morphologies of disc herniation to avoid causing confusion with referring providers.

The above illustrations follow the recommendations described in the 2014 (v2.0) recommendations of the North American Spine Society, the American Society of Spine Radiology and the American Society of Neuroradiology.1
