Dislocated proximal and distal interphalangeal joints - hand

Case contributed by Craig Hacking
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Football injury to fifth finger.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Female

Dorsal dislocation of both the fifth finger PIP and DIP joints. Minor bony debris anterior to the proximal phalangeal head on the lateral projection may represent a fracture.

Case Discussion

This case is interesting for two reasons:

  1. it is uncommon to dislocate both interphalangeal joints together; and
  2. the frontal view is a great example supporting the saying 'one view is no view'.
