Distal femoral periprosthetic fracture

There is a transverse fracture through the right distal femoral diaphysis.Extensive calcification in the suprapatellar and along the anterior aspect of the right distal femoral diaphysis.
Case Discussion
Periprosthetic fractures involving the distal femur are increasing in prevalence (most likely down to an aging population) they occur after trivial trauma such as the case above 1. Supracondylar periprosthetic femoral fractures are generally classified via the Rorabeck and Taylor system where 2.3:
- type 1: undisplaced fracture with a well-fixed prosthesis
- type 2: displaced fracture, prosthesis still well-fixed
- type 3: fracture is displaced or undisplaced, and the prosthesis is loose
