Doppler in breast ultrasound

Case contributed by Dr Garth Kruger

Patient Data

Gender: Female

Lesion high up in the left breast with a vessel nearby.

Doppler confirms the size of this artery and its position relative to the lesion that is for biopsy. A quick look with Doppler at a lesion for biopsy is good policy. In this case you will approach the lesion from a distance and fire your gun parallel to the skin. Doppler also gives you an indication of how vascular the lesion itself is.

Case Discussion

Doppler scrutiny of a lesion pre-biopsy under ultrasound guidance is always wise. It does not take very long and may prevent a large hematoma or hemorrhage.
