Presentation
Known patient with Duchenne muscular dystrophy came for evaluation of right knee pain.
Patient Data
Generalized muscle atrophy with fatty replacement is seen in the muscles of all compartment of thigh. There is relative sparing of sartorius, gracilis and semitendinosus muscles. The underlying femur is normal.
PD fat sat and STIR hyperintense signals are seen involving the tibial and femoral epiphysis with no internal derangement. Mild reactive effusion.
Muscles of the compartments of the leg show generalized atrophy with fatty proliferation. Relative sparing of both gastrocnemius heads. Underlying tibia and fibula are normal.
Case Discussion
X linked recessive muscular dystrophy that is commonly seen in children that begins in the proximal pelvic girdle and progresses distally. Non quantitative MRI usually depicts a relative sparing of sartorius, gracilis and semintendinosus muscles in the thigh and the gastrocnemius in the leg.
