Duodenal diverticulum

Case contributed by A.Prof Frank Gaillard

Incidental finding when assessing upper urinary tract in a patient with a diagnosed TCC bladder.

Patient Data

Age: 85 years
Gender: Male

Arising from the proximal third part of the duodenum is a air and fluid filled duodenal diverticulum, which projects superiorly, abutting and displacing the head of the pancreas.

Case Discussion

Duodenal diverticula are common incidental findings, which can mimic retroperitoneal or pancreatic pathology. They are rarely symptomatic but can occasionally lead to malabsorptive symptoms due to bacterial overgrowth.
