Lower urinary tract infection.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Male

Split calyceal system of left kidney which appears bulkier than the right. Dilated lower calyceal system with a normal upper pole system. Both ureters fuse prior to iliac crossing and no obstructive stone is identified. 

Case Discussion

Studies sent for stone survey should also be evaluated for anatomic variations. An abnormally bulky kidney should raise the suspicion of a duplex moiety. More often than not, there is asymmetry in both the calyceal system, making them easier to spot. Read more about the Weiger-Meyert law here.
