Eagle syndrome

Case contributed by Anthony Nuñez
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Dysphagia and cervical pain.

Patient Data

Age: 55 years
Gender: Female
ct

Ossification of the styloid process bilaterally, extending from the base of the skull anterolaterally and caudally to the hyoid bone.

Type III styloid process (pseudoarticulated).

Case Discussion

Normally, the ossification could be found in asymptomatic patients without clinical relevance. If the patient has symptoms as dysphagia, foreign body sensation, tinnitus or otalgia the ossification of the styloid process gains relevance, in order to make the correct diagnosis, as in this case (Eagle syndrome).

Sometimes requires the evaluation of cervical vasculature in order to evaluate its compromise.
