Presentation

Palpable swelling during swallowing.

Patient Data

Age: 15 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound

Absent thyroid tissue in its normal location. Instead, a well defined subcutaneous (superficial) echogenic homogeneous structure is seen prelaryngeal measuring 20x6 mm.No focal nodules. It shows average vascularity on applying color Doppler.

Case Discussion

An ectopic thyroid gland is a congenital anomaly in which there is absent thyroid gland in its normal location and is located elsewhere mainly at the tongue base (~90%), sublingual, prelaryngeal. It is common in females.
